Message from the Board of Directors, February 2012
Jacob Deng and the Board of Directors of Wadeng Wings of Hope express their sadness and regret at the recent outbreak of violence in Jonglei State in South Sudan.
Jacob’s home community of Duk Padiet, Duk County was attacked on Monday, January 16th. Many homes and buildings were burned to the ground. The death toll at last count was 85 – mostly children and elderly men and women. Twenty-thousand have been displaced.
The inter-tribal violence that has broken out in Jonglei has deep historical roots and is compounded by poverty, despair and the legacy of the civil war – thousands of young men and teenagers with access to weapons. It also demonstrates the vital role that education can and must play in bringing peace and security to the people of South Sudan.
Wadeng Wings of Hope continues to work to pursue our goal of building and running a school in the Duk County region. However, the immediate need is humanitarian, and Wadeng is mobilizing to help. People need food, shelter and a means to survive.
